this region consists mainly of a middle class population with some less priviledged areas around the old railway station on rua guaçu - the remains of the station were demolished by the state in 2006 though the rail line remains. engenheiro leal is located on the border of morro de dende, which is also considered to be one the third largest favelas of rio de janeiro, housing over 50,000 inhabitants. contradictory to common preconceptions about 'railway towns', this neighborhood is developing examplerary and making a number of positive environmental changes including cultivating green areas and initiating reforestation. | costa barros | |||
