at a glance

the main access to freguesia is still via avenida paranapua, named after the indigenous word for 'bosom of the sea' - several favela communities are contained within the neighborhood, including silva campos, tremember, morro das araras and bela vista da pichuna, among others.

in the 2000 quality of life index the neighborhood was listed as number 60 out of a total of 126 neighborhoods in rio de janeiro.

It's location and thriving gastronomy have contributed to it becoming one of the main leisure destinations for residents of the island as well as visitors. points of interest include the Pedra da Onça, (rock of the jaguar) a landmark with a sculpture of the Maracajás felines that once populated the area. arrow-back      arrow-forward
