in fact, southern right whales (eubalena australis) are often spotted in this region during winter and spring,  as they migrate north from antartica to their breeding grounds in the warmer waters.   reaching 16 meters (45 ft) in length, these whales are a protected species, following years of extensive hunting. efforts to restore their population appear to have been successful and numbers are showing a strong yearly growth. 

praia da reserva ecológica, commonly called praia da reserva is technically part of barra beach, however many consider it to be a beach in its own right. this stretch of beach is characterized by a lack of structures and buildings - instead it is surrounded by the beautiful reserve of marapendi.
