ipanema's bustling main street, was
formerly named rua 20 de novembro
by the baron of ipanema - it was renamed in
1922 as a tribute to colonel line joaquim pires de carvalho and
albuquerque (1788-1848), the first viscount of pirajá, who has been
recognized for his contribution to the brazilian independence
struggles in 1822, in particular within the state of bahia.

joaquim pires de carvalho and albuquerque was a brigadier, and
considered one of the greatest heroes of the war of independence
of brazil.
