antónio joaquim pires de carvalho e albuquerque was colonel of the regiment of the tower militias, and later became viscount of pirijá and baron of the garcia d' ávila tower - he fought ardently for brazilian independence against the portuguese in bahia, organizing and commanding the base for operations during the independence war of 1822-1823.
