avenida epitácio pessoa, the scenic road surrounding the edge of the magnificent lagoa rodrigo de freitas, is home to some of the most upscale real estate in rio. the avenue was named in honour of president epitácio da silva pessoa (1865-1942) who was a brazilian politician, judge and two-year president of the republic.

epitácio da silva pessoa, born in paraíba, graduated with a bachelor of law and social sciences in 1886 and became a public prosecutor in the city of bom jardim - in 1898 he was appointed as minister of justice under president campos sales and in 1902 became minister of the supreme court.
