rua teixeira de melo is located right in the gastronomic centre of the neighborhood of ipanema in the famous zona sul (south zone) of rio de janeiro - the short street runs only three blocks from the popular section of ipanema beach, between posto 8 and posto 9, past general osório square, across rua visconde de pirajá and concluding at barão da torre.

the street was named after the honorable josé alexandre teixeira de melo, who gained fame as a doctor, historian and writer of prose in the second half of the 19th century in rio de janeiro - he founded the cadeira 6 of the academia brasileira de letras (the brazilian academy of letters), and occupied the post of director of the national library of brazil at the turn of the century.
