rua redentor, located in rio's affluent
ipanema neighborhood,
was formerly named rua 30, and then given its current name in 1928,
in honour of the
christ the redeemer (cristo redentor) statue, one of
the most visited attractions in rio de janeiro.
the christ the redeemer, located on the corcovado mountain, at more
than 2,326 feet above sea level, was proposed in 1920 by the
catholic circle of rio, who organized an event called
semana do
monumento (monument week) to attract donations and signatures in
support of the building of the statue.
