praça general osório is located at the end of ipanema, next to ipanema beach and close to the neighborhood of copacabana, in rio's much revered zona sul (south zone) - the square, which is surrounded by restaurants, bars, coffee shops, a supermarket and other services, is a social and cultural focal point in ipanema, and was named in honor of the brazilian army general gaucho manuel luís osório who was born on may 10, 1808 in the town of arroyo de santo antônio, rio grande do sul and died on october 4, 1879 in rio de janeiro.

manuel luís osório joined the brazilian army at the age of fourteen and by seventeen years was already an army lieutenant - he participated in numerous battles defending brazil and in 1856 became an army general, in 1866 osório led brazilian troops in the paraguayan war (1865-1870) and his strategies resulted in important successes on the battlefield. arrow-back      arrow-forward
