known as 'santinho' (little saint), he
was a conservative and thought to be the head of the bahia fraction,
which supported the absolute rule of emperor pedro i - he was honoured with the naming of this street in one of rio de janeiro's
most famous and sophisticated zona sul neighborhoods.
rua barão da torre is located almost midway between rio's
magnificent
lagoa rodrigo de freitas and
ipanema beach, and like
many of
ipanema's streets it has a large number of residential
buildings - it is lined with beautiful trees and is
dotted with delicious restaurants, bars
and other attractions for locals and visitors alike.
