parreiras received numerous prestigious international awards, in the late 1800's he founded the escola ao ar livre (outdoors school) in niterói, and in 1926 he published an autobiography 'história de um pintor contada por ele mesmo' (a story of a painter told by himself).

parreiras died in 1937, leaving a large collection of internationally recognized brazilian art - the museu antónio parreiras was founded in niterói in 1841 to exhibit and preserve parreiras' work and in 1848 this ipanema street was named in his honour.
